The Village Common – Mobile / Web App

This page is the very first stages of formulating ideas . It will change continually and boil down into a final plan before going to the next stage

The aims

  • We need technology that truly serves humanity
  • Technology is supposed to make our lives easier and mean we all need to work less , this is not the case for the many, and technology is all too often exploited by the few , for the purpose of profit making for the few.
  • Uber, AirBnB, JustEat, Ebay, Gumtree are all very good at allowing individuals/small businesses to enter large markets by directly connecting to people . Who is making the profit here though ? It is not the users , it is the companies that run these technologies
  • We need to create technology that will serve all humanity equally
  • The technology must be run by a group / coop / trust that is not for profit and should literally only take what it needs to maintain itself and grow ( sustainably ) . The core objective is to create free and unlimited exchange between people, where the people/communities are the main beneficiaries
  • This technology will never be about making profit for the makers / maintainers / owners of the technology
  • This technology will be publicly or cooperatively owned and set up in such a way that it can never be otherwise
  • This technology should be by the community and for the community
  • This technology will act as a bridge , it is not an end result . It should be a bridge from our current selfish capitalism to interconnected local communities who support and care for each other. The technology may well be switched off once the goal is reached. It will reach out to those isolated and connect them to their community ( in many ways )

Mobile and Web App

Features – Market (regularly available produce / products )

  • BUY
    • user opens app
    • see categories of products , search for products , add to basket , pay
    • the actual products come from all over the local area from different businesses/ventures but appear as if they are in one store all together
  • PACK
    • items are placed in temp boxes / crates by each store the user bought things from , barcode for order
  • Collection run
    • van driver has Logistics app
    • sees list of customers/deliveries for the day
    • sees route on map for collection of products ( collection from businesses / ventures )
    • sees route of deliveries to make on map ( to users / customers )
    • in morning a van leaves from depo with a box for each user ( barcoded ) , the van drives around all the businesses that have orders waiting to go out. And decants the users order into their box ( the one van driver set out with ) , scans barcode once everything is in the box
  • Delivery Run
    • driver looks at his predefined route and sets off to deliver
    • user can see where driver is on map and has an estimated time of arrival
    • scan box again on delivery to user
    • boxes are kept by driver

Features – Helpfulness ( support each other to do things )

  • users can post a need ( something they need, help doing something, need advice, need to borrow something )
  • users can look through the list of needs and reply to a need / make a pledge to try and help with that need
  • ( for example , user posts “ I need help to decorate the childrens bedroom as I am not that good at painting , so would like help for a day with this” , other user pledges to help )
  • ( for example , “I am setting up a group for xyz and would like some help with abc” )
  • the two connected users can then communicate via the app messenger

Feature – Community Lifeline

  • For people in difficult situations to call out for help
  • it could be that everyone in the community make and refresh pledges each month for what they pledge they could offer in an emergency to others in the community

  • examples – should be listed in different categories
    • local businesses can advertise
    • local practitioners can advertise services

  • give away free things

Features – For Sale

  • People can list things they want to sell, could work a bit like facebook market place
  • have a features that user makes pledge to buy , and seller accepts , if user does not collect , can revert listing to live again ( this way sold items dont continue to be displayed )

Features – Transportation

  • lift share
    • list a journey you would like a lift for
    • list a journey you will be driving on
    • match drivers with passengers
    • no money should be involved in this
  • Community Postman
    • list something you need moving from x to y and when you need it moving
    • drivers can look at listings and help move things
    • these journeys could have calculated fees ( so our system takes the addresses of collection and drop off and works out distance and sets the price for this , then the driver claims this from the person wanting the thing posted ) and could be a small amount of money , so it makes financial sense for both parties to use this feature

Features – Lending

  • peer to peer lending ( money )
  • the app does not handle any contracts or monies but connects people together , who then make their own arrangements

  • Village web local hub ( there will need to be a central office / location / persons that can act as a hub for various things , like delivery run, complaints , it should also be noted that we should try and design the system/ architecture with minimum need for a hub , so the hub will be there only for things that we literally cant find a way of making them peer to peer
  • the features/areas should be modular , so that we can introduce them into the app / system one by one as we grow the system . Also so that they can be switched off / hidden if needed

  • offers / products each have a radius of offer and are emanating from the location of the one offering
  • what the user sees is things that are on offer within their area as specified by the person/business making the offer ( business specifies radius they offer their thing within , from their own location )
  • area hub – this is the central node of an area / an office / persons acting has hub
    • technically hubs have their own server and data , apps connect to this
    • for the uk there is a server that lists all the hubs / nodes , and connects new apps to their local hub

  • way to report abuse of system – sent to area hub
  • protecting peoples data and privacy
    • dont show addresses or phone numbers to peers in normal operation
    • addresses only visible after an agreed trade that requires address
  • should people have to use their real names ?
